Theme Thursday - End of {high chair} Days

I meant to post this [ahem] about six months ago, but as many things go around here - I don't get my blogging done in a timely fashion. Case in point, by the time anyone sees this - it will be Friday.

Anyway, this is the last week that Stacy at The Land of K.A. is hosting Theme Thursday. Appropriately, the theme is The End.

What better way to end with Stacy is to share the end of the need for a high chair. Literally, Harrison just grew out of it; if he had his shoes on we couldn't get him out easily anymore. Now it sits in the corner, waiting for it's new beginning. That will come.

And here are some highlights of the high chair days.
It served us well, ending it's tour of duty in August of 2008. The end of high chair days for Harrison.

Thanks Stacy, for hosting as long as you did!

Theme thursday - Pure Imagination

This is one of my favorite images from childhood. It's a poem from a version of A Child's Garden of Verses that my mother gave me as a young reader. It's illustrated by Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone. I have four books illustrated by them from my mother that now sit on Harrison's bookshelf. I can't even begin to tell you how much I LOVE their art. The light, wispy pictures have always enamored me. I wanted to be these children. When I looked at the pictures, they took me to far away places and a feeling of lightness. Where for a moment my world was perfect.

The stories and images lit a fire in my imagination. I would scour the house for everyday things that I could use to create my own little world like I saw in the books. I even made my own ship on our basement stairs that my mom worked around for weeks.

I would go outside and build Indian tee-pees, and line my friends and neighbors up for a musical march, I would sit on the top of hay stacks and sing songs at the top of my lungs to the farm animals - and they always listened.

And it all started with stories and books.

I'm visual and I love the power of the written word combined with beautiful illustrations in the books of children. Especially in vintage books. I LOVE vintage books.

It's hard in today's world for some families to not get caught up in television and consumerism. It's everywhere, for us, I chose books that are not "branded" with the exception of library books that Harrison picks out. Clifford the Big Red Dog often visits our house for a few weeks; but Harrison has only a handful of books that are based on a television show. An Elmo [I spy-type of] book, a few Baby Einstein board books and a reprint of the Disney classic, Pinocchio.

Harrison's grandmother made one request about bringing up Harrison. To read to him. I've kept that promise. Although I don't read enough myself, I read to him. He loves story time.

It sparks his imagination.

I hope that fire keeps burning.

When I think of the word imagination - I can't help but think of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Pure Imagination is one of my favorite childrens songs. After all the movie was birthed from a book and the lyrics could easily refer to the adventure of reading.

Come with me and you'll be
In a world of pure imagination
Take a look and you'll see
Into your imagination

We'll begin with a spin
Trav'ling in the world of my creation
What we'll see will defy
Explanation

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Want to change the world, there's nothing to it

There is no life I know
To compare with pure imagination
Living there, you'll be free
If you truly wish to be

Reading allows us to be anyone we want to be, takes us anywhere we want to go and teaches to never stop using our imagination. I only hope that Harrison will always love to read.

Go say hi to Stacy at Land of K.A. today for more imaginaton.

**edited to say that I had a busy day and published this late. I went to Land of K.A. to see that Stacy and I were "on the same page" today! How funny!!

Theme Thursday - We Create

I haven't had time to be creative with PhotoShop lately, but the other night I finally sat down and played with a couple of my favorite pictures from the last couple of couple weeks.

Harrison was very excited to find a worm in the back yard, he played with the little thing until, well, it's unfortunate demise. Even giving it gentle kisses (yes, kisses. What? Some people eat worms.) More to this story later...

There is nothing he loves more than a big empty room that he can run, spin and dance around in. He takes his dancing very seriously. (In fact, as I quickly type this he is dancing to the Chitty-Chitty Bang-bang soundtrack!)

I try to encourage creativeness at home as much as possible and Harrison brings many pictures home from preschool, most of which are self explanatory. The other day he brought home this with his artwork:

It was unmarked so I asked him as he sat eating a snack.
"Harrison what's this?"
He looks up at it.
"Oh. Yeah...That is paint."
Pause.
Then sighs,
"On a plate."

Paint on a Plate, who would have guessed?

Theme Thursday - How to Bake Pumpkin Muffins...

GET A MIX!

Seriously, some days in the kitchen with Harrison can be a challenge, so when he told me it was "time to make pumpkin muffins!" the other evening, I immediately thought I have a mix! And there is still the opportunity to break eggs and measure oil and water - and, of course, turn on the mixer.

We'll create them from scratch another day.

Harrison ran into the kitchen saying "There's the Super-Duper Pumpkin Muffin Maker!"

Meet the Super-Duper Pumpkin Muffin Maker.

He's getting geared up and feeling the egg-love!

When all ingredients are added, it's time to turn it on.

And make sure all is mixing smoothly.

Off to the oven!

Mmm, nice and warm to eat!

He gives them his approval.

Trader Joe's had a GREAT pumpkin mix that tastes great and makes it easy to bake with Harrison; but we're not done! We'll be baking from scratch soon!

It's pumpkin season, I love pumpkin season!

Theme Thursday - Idle Time

Sometimes it's good just to slow down a bit.

Wrap up in the Big Blue Blanket to drink a smoothie...

And take a break.

Company in town, we'll catch up this weekend.

Head to Stacy's for more Theme Thursday.

Theme Thursday - Let the Music Play

I have an old Airline record player with a lot of 78s from the 1940's, I love it. But since the time that Harrison started walking it has been turned around to face the wall because the knobs were just too tempting not to touch.

Well, last week I decided to turn it around and try it out. I haven't had it plugged in for a couple years and he is able to exercise self-control in areas of what is his to touch and what is not.

Harrison immediately fell in love, not because the knobs turn as before; but simply for the entire experience - beginning to end.

Once he saw what happens,

he wanted to pick out the records,

Put them on the turntable, watch them drop,

Listen to the music coming out...

And then dance!

Now we have to turn it on every couple of days and dance together. He loves the "oldies" and shares the record player music with whomever will listen.

It's a regular part of our playtime together, which I cherish because I'll take any excuse to hold that little boy in my arms and dance around the room with him - especially when he is the one who initiates it.

I think [hope] he is gaining an appreciation for all things "old-fashioned". He'll point out vintage and antique items and tell me that they are "old-fashioned" and we need to be careful. But he sees the fun we can have with some of them, too.

Breathing new life into old stuff...what better playtime then that?

Theme Thursday - Creating, Playing, Relaxing

Labor Day weekend was about taking it easy for us. Harrison and I made a "tent" in his room [which is still up]. He calls it the haunted party house - mainly from Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, I'm not sure why.

He also went to the guestroom closet and requested that we get the "bigger boy" bed out; so I set it up for him to try.

There was much rejoicing and jumping.

And more jumping!

And then some rest...
Then we just relaxed and hung out on his mattress and played with toys for a couple of hours.

He loves the barrel of monkeys that I still had from my childhood.

He's been sleeping on the mattress the last couple of nights (and days), I think I see a big bed being fully set up in the near future here!

Wow, a big bed and big-boy underwear in one week! What's next?!

It's true, when they're ready - They Are Ready!

Theme Thursday - So Long Sweet Summer...

This spider web is the sign that Fall is almost upon us and Winter is just around the corner. What you can't tell by this photo is that the little spider in the middle of the shot is about the size of a dime, he had created this amazing web right outside our livingroom window! They appear every late Summer to late Fall, making webs everywhere. I can't tell you how many webs we've walked into from their overnight work regime.

Ugh, I admit, I really do hate them.

With that said, I thought I would give you a instant replay of the Summer and all it's glory. (Or should I say, my missed - and not missed - opportunities to post adventures.) through a series of snapshots, diptychs and 3-up collages [that is inspired by the photos at Six One Way created by Vintage Chica and Blue Yonder - 2 blogs I enjoy visiting].

As fun as Summer was, we had our share of challenges too. Harrison decided that he didn't want to take naps anymore (many battles lost, but the war isn't over yet.)

He also decided that he was done with that high chair (good - he was too big) and the Jr. chair (bad - he's too small for the regular chair and REFUSES booster seats).

Potty training came to a screeching halt. We're still working on it. He's starting to really notice when he has to potty - but he doesn't want to sit on the potty. College is a little ways off so we still have time!

We started playing games together, Candy Land and Cherry Ho.

When we stay around the house, we play music, read books and, well, make messes.

We tried to get out to a few places - the "dinosaur museum", Disneyland, the Aquarium, the beach. you name it. (Although we missed quite a few places.)

After the Page Museum and La Brea Tar Pits, Harrison wanted to head the local library to get books and a movie about dinosaurs. That led to a book about space and astronauts, which led us to building a rocket out of paper towel tubes and papermache. I love that Harrison ASKS to go to the library!

At camp he made binoculars out of toliet paper tubes and at Vacation bible School he made gak (slime). He watched Star Wars Episode V for the first time with his Daddy and acted out freezing Han Solo with the gak for several days (only we don't have Han Solo so CP3O had to step up to the call of duty). Luckily the guy I dig knows the Star Wars series pretty well and skipped any scary and dark parts.

He also took over big Brother's scooter and the other day we even went and got a new, better fitting bike helmet.

The most bitter-sweet moment of the summer was my annual pass for Disneyland expiring. What a blessing it has been to get in our car and go to Disneyland on a whim! We have so many wonderful memories. I know the next time we go, he will be potty-trained and tall enough to ride on Star Tours. After all, he's a "big-boy" now.

Where does the time go?

So long sweet summer
I stumbled upon you and gratefully basked in your rays

So long sweet summer

I fell into you

Now you're gracefully falling away...

I Wonder...

What the heck this is!?

We saw it in the shallow water where the boats are docked at the pier. It doesn't loo like any Stingray I've ever seen.

Anyone? Anyone?

Bueller?

Bueller?

Feel free to enlighten me. In the mean time Harrison has requested a printed copy to show everyone this find from our latest excursion to the pier.

I could fill a book with the looks of wonder Harrison has produced over his short, little life. Summer is such a magical time to go on Grand Adventures.

He wakes up each day lately and asks, "Are we going to somewhere fun today?" he's been taking 3 hours naps for the past week only to wake up and ask, "Are we going to fun place, mommy?".

Truly, I am relieved to know that just a walk down to the pier or simply to the library can be an exciting adventure for him.

But that's another story.

Oh Yah, There Was Eye Contact All Right...

Just not the warm, fuzzy, show-me-your-baby-blues kind of eye contact deemed desirable for pictures ... or dinner conversation.

Not only was he enjoying making these freaky faces, he was having riotous fun previewing them on the camera LCD screen.

This is how we spent our dinner hour.

And just when you thought my son was PERFECT.
(Later we went to our home group and Harrison ran right up to my friend and demonstrated that face.)

After several minutes of the smeary face, Daddy said, "Better not do that too much, your face will get stuck."

I missed the "picture moment" immediately following the remark as Harrison stopped, surprised, for a moment.

Let's just say, it looked like one of these. [without the runny nose.]

Which led us right into this fun...
Peek-a-boo!

Hey, at least it was eye contact! Which is what Theme Thursday is all about at The Land of K.A.

Go check it out. Eye am.

I know. Bad pun.

If only I would stop blogging at midnight.
