but there’s always room for adventures and I still try to get us out on them as often as possible – luckily he’s still a willing party.

<img style="background-image: none; after all I had good intentions of venturing there for years… However the thought of an almost hour-long drive, through the heart of Los Angeles, with a boy who hates being on freeways… well you can get the picture.

However, I was set on it, I checked their website and saw that their annual Wild West Days was coming up, so I waited a week and off we went.

<img style="background-image: none; The road was rocky yesterday – to put it lightly (let’s just say we all woke up on the wrong side of the bed yesterday, even the parakeet had an attitude). But in the end we pulled off one more year of personalized cards for Harrison’s class – complete with too many pieces of candy in each (maybe I’m still overcompensating for his Kindergarten year with the tiny dime-store valentines and no treats attached – that’s what happens when you come from a private Jewish Preschool and no elementary school experience to blaze the way).

And I confess, after last year’s VERY personalized Valentines, I couldn’t go the store-bought route just yet.

After juggling some ideas last week, I headed to Pinterest for inspiration. When I did a search for Valentines cards, every few posts were of a child holding out their hand with a lollypop attached. So glad I got that out of the way last year! By the time I was done with Pinterest, I didn’t want to see another pink or red thing in my life EVER. (…and I still hadn’t settled on an idea.)

I finally made a decision with hours to spare. We went on a mini shoot (that ended up in a parking lot at the end of the day). No fancy personalization's from Harrison this year, he just signed them and we assembled them. DONE.

After everything we went through to get these done, we still had fun.
Which isn’t that supposed to be the whole point to begin with?

When Harrison got home from school today, he showed us his Valentine cards. Today Harrison and I joined some friends at the park. We were there for four hours with them. We haven’t hung out at the park for four hours with multiple families since the Toddler days.
The Toddler days. Sometimes I miss the care-free hours of the Toddler days.
As we watched our first, second, third graders play together we reminisced and laughed at similarities in our boys. Apparently, Harrison isn’t the only one who loved wearing high heels as a toddler and the Guy I Dig isn’t the only husband who made his wife promise not to paint his son’s toenails and fingernails. But I already knew that.
Yes, those days are long behind us and last week Harrison officially started Second Grade. Unlike everyone else, I didn’t get the off-to-first-day-of-school picture posted on Facebook that day (or the second, or the third day).
In fact, {shamefully as a photographer} I didn’t even REMEMBER to bring the camera until we picked him up in the afternoon! (GASP! I know!)

However it’s all still worth a picture or six – albeit fashionably late! We got his hair cut on Sunday and sent him off to school looking half way presentable on Tuesday. He even has several friends in his class again, including his friend M. below. As we start second grade he enjoys reading and read over 50 books this summer – long and short. He finally started piano lessons and began making up songs on the keyboard once again. He did swimming lessons again, 3 weeks for VBS (vacation bible school), a week of soccer camp, a week of Breakwater Camp in the Seaside Lagoon, two weeks of Camp Menorah and a week of Art Camp. As summer was starting he discovered Cartoon Network and with it, Lego Ninjago the series, Beyblade, Pokimon, Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry and some annoying cartoons that I remind him I don’t like/want him to watch and has to turned off… it’s tough being seven years old.

All-in-all, the first week of school ended with a hug for his new teacher – a good start for the year.
Let’s just hope he’ll still want to hug her after the first test! Then as they grow there’s learning new skills, how to ride a bike, learning to read & write and all these moments are intertwined with their first experiences of life – first time they rode in a shopping cart or ate ice cream, sat on Santa’s lap, rode in an airplane or on a bus – the last goes on and on. But the special milestones, the childhood rites of passage, become fewer and farther between with each birthday.

And those baby teeth.
They are the last little bit of what he once was, my baby boy. Although I celebrate the loss of his front teeth, I’m thrilled about their departure, It makes me giddy-happy for him; the Mommy in me will miss the Baby Boy in him when his years finally abandon all things “child”.

<img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-o1iQ305j5m0/UCtEs53laHI/AAAAAAAAFoI/Dw2nPMR1qNg/videob1d45590406e%25255B23%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('c0d8122c-7662-4d06-8325-1d7fdc7e60f1'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

Luckily I still have time.

And a few more teeth.
Rose http://www.blogger.com/profile/08258281668078059348noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6503309828419504019.post-67343736873057506952012-08-01T00:07:00.003-07:002012-09-05T17:39:15.743-07:00Wordless Wednesday | BicyclingIt was one of those days where he was getting the Mean Reds (well the child-sized version of the Mean Reds, suddenly you're irritated about everything and you don't know why you're irritated)... perfect time to go get some early evening calming, exercise.

The tooth fairy has made two visits to our house so far.

On both occasions, she has successfully left four shiny quarters, {well there was that night she forgot to stop by and the disappointment on Harrison's face was heartbreaking as he tapped me awake early in that morning, holding up a tooth-fairy pillow - tooth still snug in the pocket.

This time we had a slight delay when we couldn't find the tooth-fairy pillow; however, after showing off his tooth to a friend the next day and finding the little purple pillow, he put it next to his bed, ready for the prize.

She didn't leave quarters this time. No, she left something better - or so I thought.

Harrison walked out of his room with a frown on his face and held up a Two Dollar Bill.

"Awesome!" I said, "What's wrong?"

"It's not 38 dollars." He sadly replied.

What!? As my eyes spin.
He wasn’t really that thrilled to get a hair cut.
And I admit, I kind of like that long hair – until I look at pictures of his messy, no style ‘do! He is blessed with my hairline (and thickness) that just falls right down into his face.

It was time.

So we went to our favorite guy at our local Floyd’s Barbershop. Alan has been cutting Harrison’s hair since he was four years old and we adore him (well I adore him, Harrison thinks he’s cool).
To be honest, myself being the Murphy Brown of hairstylists, I don’t know what I will do if {when} Alan moves on in life. Harrison always walks out with a great cut.

On the first visit Harrison came up with something to preoccupy his time in the chair (as DVD viewing was no longer an option). He discovered the little, built-in ashtray on the arm of the chair.

He began scooping up cut hair and shoving it in the ashtray; and to his happy surprise it came out for better ease of use! Three years later, he still scoops up as much hair as possible (which was AH. LOT. this go-round) and smashes it down in the metal container.

Somehow, I suspect this is as much action as that little ashtray gets all year, seeing as how most indoor public places are smoking-free.

The hair is cut, the ashtray emptied, the lollipop crunched - and here is the NEW {7-year-old} Harrison.

This year we made Harrison’s Valentines Day cards, he whet to town drawing on each and every card – unfortunately before he got through the last few cards he came down with a nasty cold.

Fortunately the last few cards were for the girls, so he drew hearts and flower gardens which seemed to be faster and easier.

He said to me, “Don’t say that I love so-and-so!”
“What? Why would I say that?” I responded.
(Because I tease him about loving girls every day…NOT)
He held up a card for me to see and pointing to each said, “Because I drew - one, two, three, four, five, six, SEVEN hearts on her card.”
“Okay.”
“She is cute though.”
[pause]
”And nice. But I don’t love her!”
“Okay.”
“Okay.” he repeated and continued drawing hearts on the rest of the cards.
Sadly, he didn’t get to pass his cards out today, he stayed home - still sick.

Earlier today as he looked at a picture of the cards with the heart shaped lollipop. He asked what happened to the heart-shaped lollipops. “I threw them away because they are REALLY bad-for-you candy.
“Hey, Wait! Why do you let ME eat the bad-for-me candy!?”
However, he is not forgotten in any way. Duke comes up in conversation fairly regularly with Harrison and he is always pining for another dog – most likely named Duke or maybe Carl.

Then last summer he had a new plan. A parrot. I suppose between all the pirate stories, pirate toys, pirate cartoons, pirate movies and even pirate Legos, he decided on a parrot.

Why a parrot?
Because parrots can talk.

Harrison wanted a talking bird.

Now, I loved my pet parakeets when I was young, so I was able to quickly talk him into the more manageable size bird. We read about them on the internet and watched YouTube videos of talking parakeets and Harrison even picked out a name, Duke. In memory of Duke-the-Dog.

Although I was trying to hold out for Christmas or his birthday I found a great bird store that hand feeds and hand raises their parakeets and I took Harrison to see the birds. He immediately picked out a blue, male parakeet (males are more likely to talk than females) and was able to touch and hold it. He was sweet and gentle… and he was sold.

A month later, we went back to our favorite bird store ready to adopt. Harrison walked to the parakeets and picked out a sweet little yellow female. He was set, she was IT. But Duke no longer fit. Then the G.I.D. offered up '”how about Duchess?”
Duchess it was.

She’s still a bit shy.

But we keep working with her, like letting her watch some Disney channel with Harrison.

We give her the run of the house…

Yet she always heads back to her “safe place”.

And like Duke-the-Dog, she doesn’t always want her picture taken and has no qualms about screaming about it.

After I walk away.

I planned to get Trader Joe’s Organic Lollipops, but I was rushing and happened to be at Target where I spotted some heart-shaped lollipops on the cheap.

On the cheap.
Translation: filled with high fructose corn syrups and, more so, several artificial colors and preservatives that I can’t announce and would never endorse. Plus there was my internal voice saying “WHAT?!!!”, that I was ignoring with a figurative hands-over-the-ears-saying “la-la-la-la… I can’t hear you!!” motion. [WHAT?!] But that’s another story.)
Anyway, I bought them and moved on.

Then, earlier this week, I was reminded about the evils of food dyes when I posted an article about the subject on my Facebook wall. That’s when I felt it, I looked at that pile of valentine cards with a shoulder-slumping sigh of defeat. That was not what I planned, heart-shaped or not, I can’t in good conscious give a candy to another child that I wouldn’t give to my own. (Even though I let Harrison try one – DOH! Maybe that’s why he was hyper the other night.)

Food coloring dye. Maybe you have heard of Red #40 and are familiar with the studies on the effect of [petroleum based] food dyes on children’s behavior, especially children with ADHD. I first heard about the effects of red#40 from a friend while at Disneyland in 2008, she asked me, “Do you notice a difference in Harrison’s behavior when he consumes food with red#40?” “No”, I answered. She responded by telling methat it’s in everything including Kraft Mac and Cheese. I thought for a moment and realized I hadn’t bought Kraft Mac&Cheese for some time. I went home that night and looked through my cabinets and I discovered I no longer buy most name brand packaged foods. […reason why I suck at collecting those silly Box Tops.]

Fast forward to today and the ongoing war against food dye, while the FDA has recently concluded that there is not enough evidence to link food dye with hyperactivity and voted not to add warning labels to ingredients, others beg to differ including the CSPI. Even the UK removed artificial dyes from the food beginning as early as 2008.

Consider this from the CSPI:

On my Facebook page alone, a friend brought up that her son is allergic to all synthetic food dyes, which is in EVERYTHING from our food (including fresh fruit) to our clothing. I’ve heard stories from friends about the change in behavior they observed when they cut out the artificial colors and preservatives from their child’s diet. But my other concern is that most of these dyes are more carcinogenic than once thought to be. Why do we continue to fill our bodies with petroleum based preservatives? It doesn’t even sound appealing!

And I’m not even going to start on High Fructose Corn Syrup, that’s another entire can of worms.
But think about this – HFCS and food coloring started to be used in mass in the 1970’s, less than two decades we began to see a shift in the health and weight of our children and now we are in an obesity epidemic.

Just to keep it real, I am not perfect and I’m not a food Nazi either. We do consume HTCS and food colors when were out and about it can’t always be avoided, but I don’t buy products with those ingredients. It’s one of my baby steps to better eating along with better planning and fresh ingredients.

So when Harrison takes his completed Valentines cards with a little treat attached to school next week, I will have no guilt.
Next to a home baked goodie, it’s a treat that a mom can be proud of giving.
Okay, I’m pushing now.

But even a 1st Grader can pronounce every ingredient on this lollipop label.
Rose http://www.blogger.com/profile/08258281668078059348noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6503309828419504019.post-13339501054166569732012-02-07T11:57:00.000-08:002012-02-08T00:08:41.614-08:00The Next Best Thing

Yes, some days I hate living in a condo.
Because honestly, some days I just don’t feel like going down to the nearest park for outside time.

Some days Harrison hates living in a condo.
Not because I won’t go down to the park for outside time.

No.

Because he wants a tree house.
And why not, he’s a boy.

Heck, I wanted a tree house when I was a kid… and I’m a girl.

Anyway, this summer I did the next best thing I could do, I went to Home Depot, picked up some wood and put together a portable tent, all for less than $10. I’m so handy - I even drilled the holes in the wood for bolts so I could fold it and move it when need be (I guess those Theater set building classes in college finally paid off)!

It’s a little big for inside this home, however we had to give it a test run.

Then we set it up outside on the deck. Yup. I used a curtain rod to hold up the fabric (which I already had).

After some select toys, pillows, blanket and twinkle lights, he was set.

He spent hours out there… until the rain set in a couple months later and we had to take it down for the season.

Back yards and tree houses are highly overrated anyway.

Not Really.
No, he’s not a baby any longer; but like so many other moms feel, he’ll always be my ‘baby boy’. So how could I deny the rare opportunity capture the sleeping boy one afternoon.

I love these quiet moments when all is well with the world. When I just look at him and sigh.

He came home from school this day, asked for a snack and announced he was going to take a nap. A nap that lasted almost 3 hours. A nap that doesn’t happen often.

A nap cocooned in his Big Blue Blanket.

I bought the blanket on clearance at Target ( I love Target) to use as a throw blanket for our old, beloved blue sofa right before Harrison was born.
I think we love that sofa almost as much as our blue rocking chair. Maybe because it’s one of the first pieces of furniture we purchased as a married couple. You would start to think we’re hoarders or have a thing about the color blue. No, not really… on either count.

Harrison didn’t have a comfort item when he was tiny which was quite challenging. Until he discovered the Big Blue Blanket. (as it is now called) around two-years-old. The blanket has not been very far from him ever since. It’s even made several appearances on the blog and flown half way across the nation multiple times over the last couple years.

I know the days are numbered for both the ‘boy’ as he is now and the blanket… which is starting to show it’s wear - not unlike an much-loved stuffed animal.

In the mean time, there he lay, on the sofa, sound asleep, happily wrapped in his Big Blue Blanket. Perfect, beautiful, peaceful.

I love these sweet quiet moments…

I still remember the day I noticed those freckles appear and I LOVE those little eyelashes. He doesn’t like the rain. He gets wet in the rain. And when he got to the table to eat breakfast, he was greeted with a waffle and hash brown patty instead of pancakes. Waffles give him heart burn.

“Waffles don’t give you heart burn.” I responded.

“They do today”. He answered.

On the way out the door I gave him a different umbrella, it’s doesn’t open automatically – the other one opens automatically. The other one has to spokes sticking out, I don’t want him poking some kid’s eye out. I got a heavy sigh and frown.

At school, he got in trouble for not listening – “twice”, he announced.

“I was telling friend #1 not to sit on the square because something yucky was on it, eeww! Then the teacher told me I needed to listen.”

“Later on friend #2 wouldn’t move forward, he’s supposed to move forward! I told him he has to move forward – the teacher told me I have to stop talking and listen.”

During recess Harrison fell and scraped his knee. He told me that it REALLY stung but “there are only two reasons you can go to the nurse - if your bone is sticking out this way (as he twists his wrist into an unnatural position) or if you’re bleeding”.

“I wasn’t bleeding.” He huffs.

Then at the end of the day friend #3 jumped in a puddle, kicked water toward him and got his socks wet. He had to walk home in wet socks.

“I hate wet socks!”

At home I sat down on the sofa next to him to listen to his day assuring him that we all have bad days, he burst into tears and blurted out, “And now I can’t find the paper fortune from my cookie and it was really good!”

“…I was kind to that little boy in the store this weekend and helped him find his mommy and then he smiled at me and my fortune said, ‘be kind to others and kindness come back to you’… BUT NOW I CAN’T REMEMBER IT AND I LOST IT!”

(we found the fortune under the dining table.)

Later, as I started making dinner, he was jumping up and down behind the counter, playing peek-a-boo with me... Until he misjudged a jump and bumped his head underneath the counter.

Not too long after that as he hid under the table, pouting about yet another indiscretion, Daddy came over to inform him it was time for homework. A short drama ensued. We told him he had to come out and do homework or else and as he crawled out in his grumpy state, he stood up too soon and banged his head again – “in the same place!”.

“I’m really having a BAD DAY!” he cried.

We sat down on the sofa to regroup and pray. After a few more tears, I played him a Nina Simone song– reminding him that tomorrow will be a new day.
God and Nina, that made him feel better.

The G.I.D. told him that his mantra for the day was,
“Rainy Days and Mondays Always Get Me Down".
And even though it was lost on the six-year-old – I smiled.

At the dinner table I read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Harrison laughed and happily declared, “At least I didn’t have THAT BAD of a day!”

And with that, bedtime was a breeze.

I hope it doesn’t rain next Monday…
Rose http://www.blogger.com/profile/08258281668078059348noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6503309828419504019.post-62432918720688439892012-01-24T00:32:00.000-08:002012-02-08T10:02:57.233-08:00A Big-Kid Room

It’s actually been MONTHS since we re did Harrison’s room. After we moved we had to combine Harrison’s room with the toys from the guest room/playroom/TV room. Not to mention the toys big Brother brought over to the house before he went off to college.

It quickly become obvious that just moving the furniture from Harrison’s nursery wasn’t going to cut it in the new space. We had to let some of it go to move forward in a new environment.

I searched for a good couple months. Finally, I landed on the Ikea Expedit shelves as the perfect resolution to my space issues. Shelving that could grow with Harrison.

So off we went to Ikea to get the new furniture – only to find out they were changing manufacturers and would have the units for two – three months!

Let me tell you, we have three Ikeas within a 50 mile radius – I tracked them all and I became very well acquainted with Craigslist to no avail.
Finally, they were back in stock and I drug the hubby to the nearest Ikea as fast as humanly possible.
I didn’t get the walls painted yet, but we love the outcome of Harrison’s room.
Harrison loves the outcome of his room.

In the picture above, you can see the clear bins that hold all of Harrison’s Legos. I love these; most of the time he only dumps one small bin at a time as opposed to dumping a giant tub all over the floor.

We swapped out the smaller unit in the closet with the vintage chest of drawers. It works much better next to the bed and still fits the pails that hold miscellaneous toys.
As he cleaned his room the other day to prepare for a play date, he stood back to take it all in. Boys and jeans go together like a horse and carriage, peanut butter and jelly, salt and pepper, Rosemary and Thyme, Laurel and Hardy, George Burns and Gracie Allen… well you get the idea.

Heck, when I was a kid, I longed for jeans. Where I grew up jeans were cool – especially Levi’s. And I WANTED Levi’s, no other jeans were good enough – not Calvin Klein, Wrangler, Lee or Sassoon. No. I needed traditional, button-fly Levi’s. But don’t cry for me, I had jeans - I just didn’t own a pair of Levi’s until I was in college.

Harrison, however, has already owned several pairs of Levi's (Thanks to Big Brother, re-sale stores and friends). Although it’s not about Levi’s; he doesn’t like ANY jeans. He admonished me again this morning when I made him wear jeans to school (instead of exercise pants),
“Mom, remember, I don’t like jeans.”

I remember, but you’re wearing them anyway.

I mean after all, who DOESN’T own at least ONE pair of jeans to wear occasionally?

Then again, there was my mom.
She owned 77 pairs of polyester, elastic-band pants - in a rainbow of colors.

Not one pair of jeans.

Apparently the no-jeans gene skips a generation.

Hosted by Cecily and Lolli
Rose http://www.blogger.com/profile/08258281668078059348noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6503309828419504019.post-26963646156468574602012-01-18T00:58:00.000-08:002012-01-18T00:58:11.758-08:00Wordless Wednesday | Zombie!!This year it's been all about zombies.
