He's Gone and Done It! - Theme Thursday

What has he done now, You ask?

He has made the conscious choice NOT to nap any longer.

"Mom, I'm not sleepy. I don't NEED to take a nappy."
Period.

And did you notice something?

He didn't call me "Mommy" or "Mama"...

No.

He has taken to calling me "Mom"!

What??
Does he really think he's a tween? Seriously, don't answer that.

So what happens when he doesn't take a nap?

He wants to play non-stop with ME. It's the NON-STOP part that is causing a riff in my universe. We can play for a good couple hours and where I am done and need a break, he's got a little more pushing me down to do, or "falling into the water and-you-cry-and-save-me" to do , or "pitch the ball just 10 more times, mom", or "you be the big mean robot and I be the good robot" to do, or - well you got the point.

Non-stop, people.

Work is not finished.

Laundry is not finished.

I can't seem to plan meals.

MY down time is not accomplished. Yes, I tell him that even mommy takes a rest.

He IS - Non-stop.

In the dictionary there is a picture of Harrison next to the phrase - Non-Stop.

It's no longer about trains or planes.

He puts the Energizer Bunny to shame!

In the encyclopedia - he's there...
Charles A. Lindbergh (American aviator)
American aviator, one of the best-known figures in aeronautical history, remembered for the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic, from New York to Paris, on May 20–21, 1927.

Sir John William Alcock (British aviator)
Aviator who, with his fellow British aviator Arthur Brown, made the first nonstop transatlantic flight.

Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones
At midday on March 20, 1999, they became the first balloonists ever to travel nonstop around the world. [Hot-air balloons photo credit : Jim Larsen]

Harrison Pierce

Toddler moving at non-stop pace while no longer taking naps. [And the look on his face shows it.]

What do I want?
A vacation.

Dang, I love that boy. (Anybody want him for a week?)

Tee hee... cute post! I know how you feel... well almost. I have a little girl so they say she's not as rambunctious and she's still quite young. I'm already wanting a vacation but am I allowed to take her with me? hehe

oh yes, i understand completely! bean stopped taking naps oh about 8 months ago (you know, when i was pregnant and dead tired!) all i hear now is "what are we going to do now mommy? what do you want to do now?". sometimes i tell her that mommy needs a nap and she looks at me and says, "no, your not a baby mommy! only babies take naps!" sigh.

Yes, don't they know that mommy's need a rest?? Love this post - so true!

Kai stopped taking naps months ago and Anya is on the cusp of it. I think she does it at daycare just from peer pressure, but at home on the weeks we don't have as much luck. That's when they get "quiet time" in their rooms. :)

oh heavens, the no nap turning point. not pretty. unfortunately, it happens to everyone sooner or later. are you putting him to bed earlier and then relaxing? only saving grace is the early bedtime. i feel your pain :).

We're right there too... since when do two-year olds not need naps anymore?
Defintely, there's room for "quiet time"!
I enjoyed your post - especially the encyclopedia entry!
He looks like a fun-loving kid.

lol I hear ya!!!!! I want a vacation, too! All alone.

What is with them saying "mom"??? I can't stand it when Adam calls me mom, it hurts my heart. It means he's growing up... I much prefer mommy!!

Me too!! Nap time is such a struggle.

Oh you were lucky it lasted as long as it did. My guy stopped at a year - yikes - and my girl stiill has maybe one or 2 a week but really has stopped since she was 2!! EEEKKK - he sure is cute though.

ROFLOLOL Yep! This is me, too. Except I have 3... a tween, a toddler, and a into-everything-baby-boy! I'm already dreading when the baby boy is a toddler not needing naps! UGH!

Yep! A long long vacation is what the doctor ordered!

LOL! My 18month old is so going to be just like this when he gets that age. Right now he is still taking nice LONG naps and it is my saving grace! Hope you get your vacation!!!

Haha!!! I've got the first taste of how you feel... mine's only 22 months, so he still naps.
Have you tried "quiet time?" It's something I do with my daughter while my son naps. She sits in her room - quietly - and reads books for an hour, then we're both rested and can tackle the rest of the day (I hope)

Sing it sister! I know exactly what you mean.

Can I get an amen!! How I long for the day that my "free time" isn't between the hours of 11 -1 am!

Great post, love the pioneers of "non-stop":)

Oh my poor friend! I feel your pain...and although A. thinks she doesn't need a nap, she really still does need some rest - but it is hard to convince her of that!

But the giving up of Mommy/Mama for Mom and no nap all at the same time?!! It is too much for this Mama...

Christina said...

PLEASE keep Harrison away from Nadia right now! She is very close to giving up naps too, and I'm SO no ready for that!
She calls me Mom too...all the time. *sigh*

This was perfect. My guy is the exact same way. Mine only naps for 40 minutes; barely enough time to fold laundry and/or make dinner.

Let's go on vacation, shall we? :)

Anyway, I feel ya.

All good things must end. I'm sorry. What about quiet time in his room? Put a little table and chair in there, 45 minutes maybe?

Maggie said...

Oh no! Napping hours are some of my favorite hours of the day. The rule for us is that if you don't want to nap, you can stay in your room and play quietly until it's time to get up. Two hours, minimum. And believe it or not, it has worked really well.

I know exactly what you mean. The roll playing neverends in my house. I just dont have the energy for it! I still put Ella down for anap, but she is up quicker than I can shut the door, turning on the light to play in her room. ITs the best I can get. Even if its just an hour to recharge, for the both of us....Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your comments and (more so) suggestions today. have been trying to incorporate a "rest" or "quiet" time for him. Hit and miss there, but I'm not done yet. :)

Oh how I could use a vacation, that won't happen at the moment. But I do have a say at the Spa that the Guy-I-Dig gave me for Christmas. Time to use it!!

Megan - so true, I was just hoping for even later before dropping naps. He started walking at 10 months, I was hoping for - oh say - first grade! No really - 14 months. But Harrison had other plans! And no, only a couple time did he go to bed earlier, but part of that has been our summer schedule.

Chaoticfamily - I know how lucky I've been, once he went to one nap a day he started sleeping 2 to 3 hours each day.

Allie - That's me! 11pm to 1am! Bad habit. No wonder I'm so tired!

HipMomma - You nailed it. I've been making him have a rest time in his room (usually in bed with a couple books or favorite toy)But in only lasts for about 45 minutes.

I'll keep you posted and I'll try to go to bed earlier myself.

I'll take him, that way he and my non-napper can entertain each other the whole time!! But then we have to trade back, meaning you take mine too. Deal?

I know what you mean about the non-stop playing. Welcome to my world! : )

Oh, yes, I remember the trauma of the ending of nap time. I got worn out, just reading your post. This stage, too, shall pass. Hang in there! (I know that really doesn't help...)

Lola said...

No wonder you mentioned naps on my blog! Just as my baby is finding more sleep, your pre-schooler is waking up. More stages for me to look forward to...

I can't agree with you more. And my toddler loves to tell me he doesn't need a nap. At least he hasn't gotten out of calling me Momma just yet. ;)

And most days he really does get out of the nap. Other than dealing with the non stop action, it does help with bedtime.
