The G.I.D. sang that song to Big Brother when he was a toddler and young child, only the words were slightly different '
You are my son, SeanBig Brother is 17 now, not many opportunities to sing to him anymore. Once in a while the two reminisce about it in it a male-bonding sort of way, but that's about it.
My only son, Sean...
Now we have Harrison, and we have each sang that song to Harrison. We sing it to him with all of the nostalgia it holds for us in our individual memories, we sing it with the joy of watching another beautiful life blossom; with all our heart we sing it because it so simply expresses our feeling for our children.
You are my sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away
The other night, dear,
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried.
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skys are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skys are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

Now, I never knew there was more past "Please don't take...". There's a second verse? And I've always said,"You'll ALWAYS know dear..."
What a sweet post! The memories behind our childhood songs literally do make the soul sing!
Like hipmomma, I never knew the words beyond verse 1. Thanks for sharing!
That is such a sweet post - thanks for reminiscing with us. :) Love the picture, too - he is smiling for all he's worth!
Oh, that is the sweetest! And I love that picture of you and Harrison -- it's adorable!
Such a sweet post - and I too did not know the rest of the words so thank-you for sharing.

I didn't know all of the verses to this! Thanks for teaching me! :)
that is a fantastic photo of the two of you!
we love the sunshine song, too!
This was so fantastic. I was sung and sing this to my son too, so I was totally partial to it!
That little guy is so stinking cute!
"You are my son, Sean" Oh, that's so sweet! We had several variations of the song we sang, too. Very tender post!
The day I found out I was pregnant, with Adam, I started singing this song to him. I've sang it at least once a day, since. I don't think I've even missed a day. And when he's hurt, sick or sad he says "sing me the sunshine song!" Such a special song....
Love the photos, too! :)
What a sweet story. I loved that song when I was a kid too.
Songs are cool. I have a short one that I used to sing to my daughter, usually as I was tramping up and down the hall, trying to get her to go back to sleep. She's 14 now, so the opportunity doesn't arise too much...I kind of miss it.
What a wonderfully sweet post!
I love that little ditty too and sing it to my boys often. Such wonderful memories you have and are making now.
